The Nashville Bonsai Society has been an active group in the Nashville area for over 50 years.  It was founded to promote the enjoyment, education, and appreciation of the art of bonsai.  The Society welcomes everyone interested in this unique and beautiful living art with an artistic influence. We invite you to share in the bonsai experience and to develop your bonsai skills through study and hands on instruction. On a regular basis, our exhibits and related art forms are used to present bonsai to the public.

Activities

Traditional activities include the Society’s annual bonsai exhibit, collecting trips, summer picnics, field trips and garden tours.  Other club interests include Suiseki (viewing stones) and Shohin (small bonsai) and Kusamono (arranging grasses & flowers in pot as accent plants). National and regional conventions are on the calendars of many of our members.

Exhibits

The Society sponsors one and occasionally two shows which are open to the public. The shows often include demonstrations as well as a marketplace.  These provide a fantastic opportunity to view some of the best bonsai in Middle Tennessee and purchase bonsai related trees and pots.

Instruction and Mentoring

The Society offers many opportunities for members to learn from each other and grow in their appreciation of the art. Each year the club offers a six-session class, called Bonsai 101, The program is intended for NBS members who have little or no experience with bonsai.  Through lectures and hands-on experiences, we explore the basics of wiring, styling. We learn some of the horticultural skills needed to succeed and the fundamental science of bonsai.

Members who register for the class are encouraged to attend all six sessions as the information builds upon itself. In addition, some members provide individual lessons.

Meetings

NBS has a club meeting monthly, except July, August, December and January. Time and place available on this website under Events Calendar. Visitors are always welcome to join us!  Programs are informative with lectures and demonstrations by members or guest artists who offer valuable insights on bonsai. The techniques of bud pinching, repotting, root pruning, branch wiring, trimming, fertilizing, air layering and other methods used to style and maintain bonsai are discussed.

Members will receive a monthly email newsletter or may access on our website.  The newsletter provides information on upcoming events, bonsai tips and other Society business.

Membership Dues

As with all organizations, due are needed to partially defray expenses. Annual dues are $35 for an individual and $45 for a family, $10 for a Jr. if not with a family, under 16 years of age.
